Gosh, we’ve seen plenty of both these infection. If I had the time, I
would research data on fungal anomalies since Controlling the Weather

California condor chick died last month of West Nile virus
By The Associated Press Thursday, September 15, 2005

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A 3-month-old California condor chick that died last month was killed by West Nile virus, federal environmental officials said Tuesday.

Scientists attempted to retrieve the chick from its nest for a medical examination but it died Aug. 25 before being treated, said Alex Pitts, spokeswoman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The chick hatched May 19 in the wild in Ventura County.

A necropsy determined the cause of death was a West Nile infection and also secondary fungal pneumonia, Pitts said.

Pitts said California condors in captivity and the wild have been inoculated with a West Nile vaccine. The chick’s parents were vaccinated in June 2003 and again in June 2004.

The Fish and Wildlife Service plans to also give chicks hatched in the wild the vaccine, Pitts said.

"They’re very endangered and the West Nile virus doesn’t help," she said. "It’s another hurdle that people recovering condors have to clear."

Another chick was hatched in the wild this year in California, according to the service. That chick, which was removed from its nest after appearing underdeveloped, underwent surgery to remove human trash it had ingested.

There are 125 condors living in the wild in California, Arizona and Baja California, Mexico. An additional 151 reside at the Los Angeles Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Oregon Zoo and the Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho.
