At least two dozen cows have been discovered dead in an Immokalee
pasture since late last week, authorities say.
Since Friday, deputies and animal control officers have been
uncovering the dead cattle, including some of the animals’ skeletal
remains, in a pasture near North 15th and Westclox streets.
Authorities are hoping tests of the animals’ remains will turn up the
cause of death of the cattle.
Another 108 severely malnourished cows have been moved to area
ranches to be kept in isolation, Collier sheriff’s officials say.
Five cows have been put down by authorities. So far, no arrests have
been made.
Last week, animal control officers said it appeared the animals
hadn’t eaten in two weeks.
Members of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office Agriculture Bureau,
the state of Florida Department of Agriculture and Collier County
Domestic Animal Services have been at the pasture.
