JAKARTA: The discovery of thousands of dead fish washed up on the
coast of Jakarta has sparked an environmental furore.
The Jakarta Environmental Management Agency advised people last week
not to eat fish and clams from the already polluted Jakarta Bay after
thousands washed ashore. The agency said the fish had been killed by
a neurotoxin which could be deadly to humans if the flesh was
consumed.
Then less that a week later, the agency reversed its decision and
said the fish were safe to eat.
But in a country where bureaucratic decisions are often tainted by
corruption or political pressure, many city council members suspected
the deaths were caused by runoff from the profusion of industrial
plants about Jakarta.
